Exploring, Learning, and Growing Together
BrightBurn School is acommunity based institution which was founded in May 2008 with the view of fostering children’s education especially those that come from poor and vulnerable families. The school was started to cater for the needs of the community around who could not afford a place neither in public school nor high cost private schools.
In general we are responsible for the education, health care and general economic welfare of these children through the local community empowerment. We have involved the relevant Government Ministries (e.g. Education, Health, Gender and Children) and other Non-Governmental Organizations that operate within the Country. Currently we are based at Satellite Kabiria. This is a slum area within the precinct of the City of Nairobi. It is about 15Km. to the west of Nairobi. The school has about 250 children aged between 3 years to 15 years. The school is currently up to standard Eight. We have employed fully trained teachers that have been trained according to Kenya Government curriculum.
BRIGHTBURN ORGANOGRAM
In order that we provide and accommodate all children we are obliged to provide education to all children as categorized below:
POOR CHILDREN
This category of a child may not be able to finish primary education successfully because of poverty. These children have poor parents/guardians or parents who are unemployed or seasonally employed as labourers in construction sites. Therefore the child also goes to school only when the parents get a job. In the absence of a job, no schooling for the child.
DESTITUTE CHILDREN
This category of children have single parents and the parents are unemployed or the child lost both parents through death caused by HIV/AIDS and therefore is unable to fend for himself/herself. In such cases we find that even other remaining relatives are so affected by poverty that they are not able to take care. In such cases we provide support within the care of these relatives so that complete family tie is maintained.
MODERATE CHILDREN/ABLE CHILDERN
Most of these children have parents who are employed but due to economic hardship, the parents are unable to meet the requirements of the school on time. Those whose parents are able are very few. These parents pay school fees as required but whatever they pay cannot sustain the school. Hence the need to subsidize from other sources.
